PAINTINGS BY MY STUDENT PATRICIA VALDEZ DE LA FUENTE

CORRIBA DE TOROS

UNTITLED

My paintings express the horrific events currently happening in my country and unfortunately more intensely in my hometown of Monterrey, a thriving, industrial city most affected by acts of crime.
When visiting distant foreign countries, the news spoke nothing of the magical wonders of our oceans or of the warm waters and beautiful turquoise color of our Riviera Maya, nor of the warmth and ingenious nature of our people; the news told stories of hundreds of decapitated bodies dissolved in acid.
I have felt the distress of children taking refuge in my home because their father has been kidnapped. And I have seen the unbelievable transformation of human conduct accepting as part of their daily life news of people being executed for their involvement in crime or of the death of innocent victims, students, mothers, children who have been caught in the crossfire.
But I have also felt the love between my son and his girlfriend, the tender look of a mother for  her baby who is learning to crawl, the laughter of children during recess, and their eagerness to prove to me that they can read and  to show me their drawings which inspire me.
I have also felt pride and gratification of knowing how true and strong teenagers show their leadership skills and defend their ideas and convictions to experts in World Forums who in turn admire them for their passionate beliefs and offer to take their ideas into action.
It would seem that we are re-living history and imitating the rituals of our Mayan and Aztec ancestors who reputedly were very intelligent, creative people, wealthy in land, gold and silver, but who sacrificed their young to worship the gods to receive their favors.
I believe Mexico will overcome this adversity as it has other hardships.

Amazing paintings! They are both so different, but so strong!
Thank you Rivian

These paintings are really wonderful. I'd love to see more. I wonder if she would do a visual narrative. One that tells a story, start-to-finish, without any words.
