WONDERFUL SAN DIEGO/LA JOLLA ARTISTS

I will have a new MIXED MEDIA class beginning @ The Athenaeum, La Jolla on March 25-May 13.

I would love to show you some of the unusual work by some of my very talented students.
Have you been thinking that it is time for you to try some new approaches with your ART? Studying extraordinary CONTEMPORARY masters with references to RENAISSANCE or MODERN and applying this to your own work in order to "stretch" yourself is what this studio class is about. Through DVDs, online sources, and books we will look at these artists to see what we can learn from them, how we can benefit from their experience in our own work and relate it to the time in which we live. The focus will be for you to get in touch with your unique way of CREATING ART, whether through traditional painting (abstract or representational) and/or mixed media. In this class you will get the opportunity to experiment with diverse media in ways that you have always wanted but perhaps felt that you could not. Some of the many materials to which you will be exposed are Mylar, gold and silver leaf, spray paint, photo transfer, acrylics, plaster, clay and many others. We will look at examples of work made by artists not afraid to express their individuality and take chances. With demonstration, techniques new to you will be easier to understand, and through personal critique you will see how to compose more effectively and learn the steps necessary to be able to edit your own work. Each student will be provided personal access to images of renowned artists whose work we will study along with information on techniques and materials that you will find very useful. OPEN TO INTERMEDIATE OR ADVANCED STUDENTS PLEASE. If you have questions, feel free to e-mail Rivian at 4choux@sbcglobal.net or via http://www.rivianbutikofer.com.

ENRIQUE MARTY, TOO REAL TO BELIEVE!

If you have been a follower of SHARE ART please accept my apology for not posting for such a long time! I have no excuse, however, I hope that you find Enrique Marty worth waiting for!  He brings to mind Francisco Goya  & his painting of Charles IV & his Family 1800, & his "Caprichos", Francis Bacon, & Paul Rebeyrolle.  There have not been, and are not now, many artists whose work is so blatantly realistic & painful to look at as Enrique Marty!  We were introduced to him in Japan @ The Museum of Contemporary Art, Tokyo in 2014.  We saw one of his sculptures, "The Visitants" @ the entrance & we were hooked. In fact, my Husband, Hans Butikofer did a painting derived from 'The Visitors" shown below.
I feel compelled, especially with the world as it is now, to introduce you to Enrique Marty an amazing Spanish artist whose unique & blatantly realistic work holds up a mirror that is not often pleasant to see! One cannot help but recognize (parts) of oneself and be touched, or really, SLAPPED IN THE FACE by his work!

Enrique Marty, Born 1969, Salamanca, Spain

"Marty produces works that are often controversial because of the power and freshness of his expression.  He employs various techniques, composing striking stage sets where the familiar becomes anxiously strange. His models, often taken from his intimate circle, are cast until life size is achieved.  At the same time the physical characteristics of the models are retained and exaggerated to a point that each mole or each wrinkle on the skin becomes highly visible such that they are transformed into disturbing grotesque creatures that destabilize conventional reality."

CATCHING UP WITH THE ARTIST GAYLE TAUBER

Gayle Tauber has been involved in entrepreneurial businesses for more than 40 years, mostly as a cofounder of startups that focused on health/wellness, social responsibility and the preservation of capital.  Her most recent business, Kashi Company – a producer and marketer of cereals and grain-based products  was started in 1983 and sold to the Kellogg Company in 2000. Gayle started drawing as a young girl, but it was not until she sold her business that she had time to pursue her art interest with her first teacher, Rivian Butikofer, "who has skillfully guided and nurtured her artistic exploration."

Gayle has been painting with me for several years. Gayle continues to stretch herself & is always looking for some new idea to explore. Her Master has been and continues to be Lucien Freud, the greatest portrait painter of the 20th Century & beginning of the 21st Century until his death.

Like Freud, Gayle is guided by her commitment to exploring the psychology of her subject, their "inner being" if you will, rather than simply their exterior manifestation. This is not to say that she is not searching for her "own work", she is! For example Gayle is using a more extensive palette than Freud does. It is always extremely challenging to have a master such as Lucien Freud and try not to compare yourself to him!  I am so proud of my student GAYLE TAUBER, WHO IS EVEN MORE THAN EVER AN ARTISTE D'EXCELLENCE!
All Art by Gayle Tauber unless otherwise noted.
