PAINTINGS BY MY STUDENT PATRICIA VALDEZ DE LA FUENTE

CORRIBA DE TOROS

UNTITLED

My paintings express the horrific events currently happening in my country and unfortunately more intensely in my hometown of Monterrey, a thriving, industrial city most affected by acts of crime.
When visiting distant foreign countries, the news spoke nothing of the magical wonders of our oceans or of the warm waters and beautiful turquoise color of our Riviera Maya, nor of the warmth and ingenious nature of our people; the news told stories of hundreds of decapitated bodies dissolved in acid.
I have felt the distress of children taking refuge in my home because their father has been kidnapped. And I have seen the unbelievable transformation of human conduct accepting as part of their daily life news of people being executed for their involvement in crime or of the death of innocent victims, students, mothers, children who have been caught in the crossfire.
But I have also felt the love between my son and his girlfriend, the tender look of a mother for  her baby who is learning to crawl, the laughter of children during recess, and their eagerness to prove to me that they can read and  to show me their drawings which inspire me.
I have also felt pride and gratification of knowing how true and strong teenagers show their leadership skills and defend their ideas and convictions to experts in World Forums who in turn admire them for their passionate beliefs and offer to take their ideas into action.
It would seem that we are re-living history and imitating the rituals of our Mayan and Aztec ancestors who reputedly were very intelligent, creative people, wealthy in land, gold and silver, but who sacrificed their young to worship the gods to receive their favors.
I believe Mexico will overcome this adversity as it has other hardships.

CONGRATULATIONS TO THE 2011 TED PRIZE WINNER: JR

We saw JR's work on the Quai d'Anjou in Paris, & another exhibiton & installation in Paris last year.  I have been a fan of his for some years.
"JR exhibits his photographs in the biggest art gallery on the planet. His work is presented freely in the streets of the world, catching the attention of people who are not museum visitors. His work mixes Art and Action; it talks about commitment, freedom, identity and limit."

"REFLECTIONS OF INNER SELF" by my student Angelika Erne

I think of my paintings as reflections of my inner self, what is relevant for me and my life.
There is no limitation of materials I use in my artwork. Acrylics, watercolors, pencils, markers and inks are chosen to achieve a certain look.
I want to surprise, entertain and make people curious. When I finish a piece and it is in my eyes success full , it gives me deep joy and immense satisfaction.

MY STUDENT FAITH FLEURY EXHIBITING AT L.J ART & WINE FESTIVAL

There is nothing like that special elation from creating a drawing or painting that makes people want to stop and drink in the environment I’ve produced. Now I devote as much of my time to those pursuits as I can, keeping a playful frame of mind whether it’s making an intriguing portrait, an inviting landscape or experimenting in mixed media/ collage and more abstracted forms.

THE OWL HOUSE-HELEN MARTIN'S EXTROADINARY VISION

The Garden of Mecca

CREATIVITY & LIGHT
Helen Martins

Owl House

Fugard's inspiring portrait of an aging artist in an isolated South African village, is considered by many to be his finest work. It is the story of a self-taught artist pursuing a vision that is neither understood nor accepted by her neighbors in the small Afrikaner community where she lives.
"The Road to Mecca" is based on the life of a woman named Helen Martins, who lived in Nieu Bethesda, South Africa, where Athol Fugard also owned a house. After the death of her husband, "Miss Helen" began to fill her house and yard with fantastical sculptures of camels, wise men, owls and all kinds of other creations.
The walls of her house were covered with bright paint mixed with crushed glass, so the rooms glittered with their own special light.

"The Mecca metaphor speaks to the relationship between imagination and freedom. Miss Helen's candles illuminate the deep connection between creativity and light."

THE ARTIST'S ROLE

“I don’t consider myself a Platonist but I think that the spirit is contained in the material and it is the artist’s mission to extract it.”
