As you have seen on this BLOG, I like to introduce you to known Masters as well as new ARTISTS. I met the gentleman who is the subject of this posting at a party for my STUDENT/FRIEND, Carolyn Marsden's new book launch, "Mexico, Jupiter, Submarine". David & I began chatting and he showed me some of his work to which I was immediately attracted. So, I hope that you will enjoy looking at the "bewitching" work of David Clemesha.

David Clemesha grew up in England and moved to the United States at age 16. David 's ART is influenced by his many years of illustrating children's literature which he writes with his Wife Andrea Zimmerman. He uses words & images to create joyful colorful CONTEMPORARY ART which also references European Medieval manuscripts & books. Some artists that "speak to" David are: Giotto, Dubuffet & Hockney.

NEW BOOK LAUNCH: MEXICO, JUPITER, SUBMARINE: How I Became a Writer

Exploding volcanoes! Harrowing escapes! Ouija Boards and Gong Gong on Jupiter. UFOs, auras, and fairies. Jules Verne’s submarine, under the sea and on Mars. The Beatles as a Communist plot. And the way all of this led to my resplendent writing career.

THE CREATION PROCESS

As I began MEXICO, JUPITER, SUBMARINE, I tumbled into the unknown. With big pieces of paper, scraps of this and that, found objects, cheap paint, and glue, I set out to write and illustrate my odyssey. I loved the trial-and-error, the feeling of free fall. What I created made me laugh. I was encouraged and supported in my efforts by my wonderful art teacher, Rivian Butikofer.

I paint because I am a woman.

(It's a logical necessity.)

If painting is female and insanity is a female malady, then all women painters are mad and all male painters are women.

I paint because I am an artificial blonde woman.

(Brunettes have no excuse.)

If all good painting is about color then bad

painting is about having the wrong color.

But bad things can be good excuses. As Sharon Stone said, "Being blonde is a great excuse. When you're having a bad day you can say, I can't help it, I'm just feeling very blonde today."

I paint because I am a country girl.

(Clever, talented big-city girls don't paint.)

I grew up on a wine farm in Southern Africa.

When I was a child I drew bikini girls for male guests

on the back of their cigarette packs.

Now I am a mother and I live in another place that reminds me a lot of a farm—Amsterdam. (It's a good place for painters.) Come to think about it, I'm still busy with those types

of images and imagination.

I paint because I am a religious woman.

(I believe in eternity.)

Painting doesn't freeze time. It circulates and recycles time like a wheel that turns. Those who were first might well be last. Painting is a very slow art. It doesn't travel with the speed of light. That's why dead painters shine so bright.

It's okay to be the second sex.

It's okay to be second best.

Painting is not a progressive activity.

BIRTH
On Friday February 18^th, London designer Alexandra Groover unveiled her eagerly-awaited fifth collection to a packed crowd at the Hunterian Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons in Holborn, London.

BIRTH is the first in a trilogy of short films. Exploring the concept of origin and separation, her latest collection emerges from the dark sea and chalk-white rocks that form the backdrop to the film. Directed by Au Matt and featuring a soundtrack by female artist AGF, the film was shot beneath the otherworldly cliffs of Birling Gap where Groover's sharp and striking silhouettes boldly contrast the pale, muted coastline.

Groover's latest collection is constructed of squares of fabric that metamorphose into soft, cubic shapes against the body. Once again she invites the wearer to play with and personalize the garments, and the experimental pieces presented in BIRTH are just a few snips away from being transformed into more wearable designs. In addition to women's, unisex, and men's pieces, the collection also features an exciting new collaboration with London footwear-designer Benjamin John Hall.

After studying at Central St. Martins and RISD and working in the studios of Alexander McQueen and Zandra Rhodes, Alexandra Groover launched her first collection for Autumn Winter 2009. With press from i-D, Dazed, Vogue.com, Harpers Bazaar, and Grey, and collaborations with cult bands like Sunn0))) and Bo Ningen, Groover has fast gained a strong following within the fashion, art, and music industries.

STREET ART (or if you prefer, "URBAN ART") is just about the hottest thing happening right now. Many of the artists who began doing "their thing" on the streets in New York, Los Angeles, London, Paris etc. are now in galleries, and as in this marvelous exhibit at MOCA Los Angeles, museums. I have been keeping my eye on URBAN ART for many years and have watched it develop from "tagging" or "marking" an area for gangs into an exiting "school of art" worthy of being called ART!
"Art in the Streets, the first major U.S. museum exhibition of the history of graffiti and street art showcases installations by 50 of the most dynamic artists from the graffiti and street art community, including Fab 5 Freddy, Lee Quiñones , Futura, Margaret Kilgallen , Swoon, Shepard Fairey, Os Gemeos , and JR. I was introduced to some artists with whom I was unfamiliar such as RAMMELLZEE whose work is so exiting and three dimensional. I saw some old favorites such a s Keith Haring and films about one of the greats, Jean Michel Basquiat whose work I respect very much. There are some rewarding skateboard films with parts that are pure ART. If you can see the show do not miss it! It's up until Aug. 8th.

NEW POLISH ARTIST, RAFAL KARCZ

I have a new artist to share with you named RAFAL KARCZ. (At least he is new to me.) Perhaps if you live in Eastern Europe you are familiar with him. I find his work very exiting. KARCZ is interested in "everyday" reality and expresses that reality in his own provocative way. If he gets a break he will certainly be successful. The problem with the ART market is that unless an artist is represented by a known gallery or is discovered by some big collectors it is a huge struggle. I read in the NY Times that even some artists that have been extremely successful such as Larry Rivers, Eric Fischl and Francesco Clemente, "have declined or stayed flat at auction in recent years, according to data compiled by Artnet, a company that tracks such sales." Artists are judged by different criteria more and more today, not necessarily by their talent but by who is collecting them! So, for relatively unknown artists it is very difficult!

Today I am writing about the most incredible CLOTHES DESIGNER I have ever seen, she is found in Paris, France. We were strollling around the "ART MARCHE" near Bastille, Richard Lenoir, tous les Samedis. I saw an artist that makes neat jewelry out of rubber. (will write about her later) nothing else too special & all of a sudden we came upon ARIANE MARIANE!

The Swarovsky crystals & gold leaf symbolize the JEWISH PEOPLE having been freed from Egypt & making their way to “The PROMISED LAND”, ISRAEL. Thornton Dial was born in Alabama in 1928 . He was one of 12 children and grew up poor without his Mother or his Father. Dial has lived and worked in Alabama for his entire life. The artist is self taught and in other times would have been called a "Primitive" or "Outsider Artist". I consider him right in the mainstream! Dial obviously is gifted with considerable intelligence and the ability and talent necessary to create ART that is thoughtful, gripping and expresses his way of looking at the world. He has had many important and solo shows since he was discovered.

As a child I remember reading some book(s) about Paris. The seed was planted.....I studied French for a short while at college. I had some romantic idea that perhaps I had been a Parisian in another life . I made plans to go study at the Sorbonne, however, like many young Women of my generation, I married instead....so very young. I lived in Los Angeles as a young married Mother and whenever I would hear the language of my fantasies I would talk to the people attempting to "keep up my French ". Fast forward.... I studied ART, entered another stage of life and became a "serious" painter and then teacher. (A single Mother in San Diego does not support her children and herself painting)! Finally in 1986 my dream of going to live in Paris became a reality. I was "an American living in Paris" but I felt like a VRAI PARISIENNE, ( true Parisian). I lived there for two years, learned to speak fluent French and felt very much 'at home'. I have since returned at least once if not twice a year. So, now I am a part-time Parisian. My Husband Hans & I have really traveled to some fabulous places and I have been lucky enough to get some photos that I hope you will agree are unusual. Ancient city in the upper Galilee. Safed is one of the four holy cities in Israel, together with Jerusalem, Hebron and Tiberias. It is said that the Messiah will come from Safed on his way to Jerusalem. Safed was an unusual spiritual experience for me.

The Old City of Jerusalem and its Walls has high religious value as a holy city for Judaism, Christianity and Islam.

Women praying at the WESTERN WALL which is located in the Old City of Jerusalem at the foot of the western side of the Temple Mount. It is a remnant of the ancient wall that surrounded the Jewish Temple's courtyard and is one of the most sacred sites in Judaism outside of the Temple Mount itself.

Romance has been the impetus for ART over the ages. Composers have written musical compositions to love, sculptors have made representations of their lovers, poets have written odes about love, and of course, painters have painted about it. I have included just a very small sampling of "ART FOR LOVE".

Pablo Picasso as is known had two wives and many mistresses. They were all his muses and influenced his work immensely. Oscar Kokoshka was known to have been passionately in love with Alma Mahler and when she would no longer have anything to do with him he had a doll made in her likeness. Amedeo Modigliani did not lack for women in his life. He is known for his beautiful paintings, many of Women. Included here is his Common Law Wife Jeanne Hebuterne.

Until quite recently American Indian (& others) artists have remained completely anonymous in museum shows & otherwise. It has always bothered me that these marvelous artists carrying on the traditions of their cultures, but at the same time unique, creative and dynamic have remained nameless. It is the same with the African and other so- called "primitive" artists. However, this is changing! In my opinion it is LONG OVERDUE!
"WHEN the Denver Art Museum’s signature American Indian art galleries reopened last week after a seven-month overhaul, the biggest change wasn’t the new display cases or the dramatic lighting. Rather, it was in a less obvious place: the wall labels. For the first time many of the works on display are attributed to individual artists instead of just their tribes. It is a revolution in museum practice that many scholars hope will spread, raising the stature of American Indian artists and elevating their work from the category of artifacts to the more exalted realm of art. So the museum’s “Wild Man of the Woods” mask, made in 1900 and previously identified only as “Kwakiutl,” will be attributed to Willie Seaweed, a Canadian carver who died in 1967. In another gallery an exhibition of more than 30 pieces of pottery will celebrate the extraordinary skill of Nampeyo, a Hopi woman born around 1860. Other objects, thought to be the work of single unknown creators — like a selection of Navajo “eyedazzler” weavings dated 1885-1900 — will be grouped together with labels reading, “Artist not known.”

My Husband Hans & I went to Haiti in 1989. I really didn't even know where we were going. I was notified in the restroom in Miami that I was being taken to a "disturbed area". He took me because I love to speak French and we both were, (are) so adventuresome. Hans had hitch hiked from Bern, Switzerland where he was born to all 'over the world' including Iran, Pakistan, India and by ship to Penang, Malaysia, on to Japan. (in brief). I was used to traveling in Western Europe. I had gone by myself to all of the usual places. France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Switzerland and some not so much on the beaten track like the then Yugoslavia.
Haiti was in 1989 the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere, and as we all know, still is! In my naivete I took photos of everyone that would allow me to photograph them until a man showed me a very large knife. Hans said, "That's enough of the photography for now"! I soon discovered that most of the people did not enjoy having me take their pictures, something about losing their souls through the photo. It has to do with the prevalence of the religion VOODOO.
I hope that you will enjoy seeing a few of those photos and the lovely and charming people in them. I think of them, and wonder where they might be now.....

Andy Goldsworthy,OBE (born 26 July 1956) is a British sculptor, photographer and environmentalist living in Scotland producing site-specific sculpture and land art situated in natural and urban settings. I was so inspired by his philosophy and work when I saw the 2001 documentary feature film about him called Rivers and Tides, directed by Thomas Riedelsheimer. I wish I could work out in nature like he does!

The materials used in Andy Goldsworthy's art often include brightly-coloured flowers, icicles, leaves, mud, pinecones, snow, stone, twigs, and thorns. He has been quoted as saying, "I think it's incredibly brave to be working with flowers and leaves and petals. But I have to: I can't edit the materials I work with. For his ephemeral works, Goldsworthy often uses only his bare hands, teeth, and found tools to prepare and arrange the materials. Photography plays a crucial role in his art due to its often ephemeral and transient state. According to Goldsworthy, "Each work grows, stays, decays – integral parts of a cycle which the photograph shows at its heights, marking the moment when the work is most alive. There is an intensity about a work at its peak that I hope is expressed in the image. Process and decay are implicit."

Eva Hesse was one of the great artists of the 1960s, and her major sculptural works stand out as singular achievements of that era. At once drawing on Minimalist strategies of repetition and seriality, and pushing nontraditional materials toward new modes of expression, Hesse created an art that evoked emotion, absence, and contingency. The large-scale sculptures she created in latex and fiberglass for her only solo sculpture exhibition, Chain Polymers at the Fischbach Gallery in November 1968, secured her reputation. Born in Hamburg in 1936, she and her older sister were sent to Holland on a children's train at the end of 1938. Their parents fled Nazi Germany two months later, and the family came to New York, where Hesse was raised in the German Jewish community of Washington Heights. She wanted to be an artist from an early age and studied at Pratt Institute of Design, the Cooper Union, and the Yale School of Art and Architecture. After completing her studies in 1959, Hesse returned to New York and pursued her art for just over a decade. From The Jewish Museum

"Spurred by the examples of Jean Dubuffet Joseph Beuys, Claes Oldenburg.... She never wanted to see her work smugly categorized as 'women's art.' Quite the contrary; Hesse wanted it to join the general discourse of modern images, uncramped by niches of gender or race. In 1967, Hesse discovered latex (a material she knew would eventually deteriorate), fiberglass and polyester resin. Hesse loved the irregular shapes, surfaces and translucency that these materials produced. Hesse often created elaborate, handmade pieces involving obsessive repetition. However, she was not interested in certain technical aspects of sculpture. For many of her later pieces made of metal and fiberglass, she left the fabrication to outside companies. In 1961, she met and married sculptor Tom Doyle.The couple—whose marriage was coming apart—lived and worked in an abandoned textile mill in the Ruhr region of Germany for about a year during 1964-1965. Hesse was not happy to be back in Germany, but began sculpting with materials that had been left behind in the abandoned factory: During the late 1960s, it was popular to remove the appearance of the artist's hand from the work. For Hesse, she did so more for practical reasons than intellectual ones. During this period, when she was creating some of her most well known pieces, she developed brain tumors and continued to work until she became too ill. She then directed assistants to create and install her work. Hesse died in 1970 at the age of thirty four.

Urban art sometimes known as graffiti is a style of art that relates to cities and city life often done by artists who live in or have a passion for city life. The term urban means "from the city". Sometimes Urban art is called "street art". The style of this art is mostly cartoon based, and sometimes realistic. The art is sometimes viewed as vandalism and destruction of property. In general urban art is expressed at the neighborhood level, sometimes called "hoods" or the "ghetto" where a lot of people of different cultures live together.

Another use is for ad campaigns promot an unlimited number of products or services. One of the most successful viral ad campaigns using urban art was in 1989 by Shepard Fairey. He created an image of Andre the Giant to be used by skaters and others. The promotion was called obey the giant and has even gained so much popularity to have a website created in the name of just the design. http://obeygiant.com. The urban art style has an unlimited number of uses and its basic crowd focus is male teenagers.

There are many types of "AFRICAN ART", as many as there are countries in Africa! For purposes of this post I will mention two Artists who came from SOUTH AFRICA & WEST AFRICA. I am concentrating on just two but will post others at a later posting. I have loved AFRICAN ART since I first saw it, probably when I studied ART & saw the influence that it had on the MASTERS such as Picasso, Matisse, Braque & many others. African ART is a strong link in the history of ART, and African artists have taken their deserved place in CONTEMPORARY ART.

Stressing both the physical reality of the human body and its psychological value, Dumas tends to paint her subjects at the extreme fringes of life’s cycle, from birth to death, with a continual emphasis on classical modes of representation in Western art, such as the nude or the funerary portrait. By working within and also transgressing these traditional historical antecedents, Dumas uses the human figure as a means to critique contemporary ideas of racial, sexual, and social identity.(from Wikipedia)

Soly Cissé was born in 1969 in Dakar, Senegal. He lives and works in Dakar.
In 1995 Soly Cissé did an workshop in photography which was followed by an exhibition at the Centre Culturel Français in Dakar, organized by Kodak. Cissé graduated in 1996 from the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts de Dakar.
The theme of Cissé 's paintings is repeatedly the duality between tradition and modernity.

I first saw Soly Cisse At the African Museum Dapper in Paris some years ago. I was struck by his energy and talent. We then saw an exhibiton of his at a gallery in Paris last year.
